Hall of Fame
This water springtail (Podura aquatica)
A chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis)
Big headed ground beetle (Scarites subterraneus)
Flipped over a rock that I had seen an earwig under a few weeks back. She was still there but now had about 20 babies. I didn't know they all stayed together while young or that the mother might "care" for them
The yellowjacket was a queen actually! Turns out the queens are the first to "wake up" and get the colony's work started for the season. She was working on digging the nest when I found her
Springtails with shorter antennae walk around wagging their heads trying to figure out where to go. Very cute and fun to watch
I picked up a Narceus americanus millipede from under a rock that seemed to have a really negative reaction to light. He didn't poop but kept moving around like he was trying to burrow back into my hand. He was also perfectly healthy and didn't curl up so I think he just didn't want to be out under the bright sun. I felt bad and put him back within a few minutes
One afternoon I caught carpenter ants at work on a tree and stopped to watch them. They were digging into a tree with one doing the real digging and moving out the wood crumbs from the hole, but two others were taking the crumbs and throwing them into a neater pile on the ground. They were very organized and none deviated from their little job. The two ants on cleanup duty seemed to be taking turns running up to grab wood crumbs to throw out.
